The Window Tap

The Myrtles Planation, now known as simply The Myrtles, was the destination for this paranormal adventure. Nic flew into Houston to join me on this journey, and after a four hour drive from Houston, TX to St. Francisville, Louisiana (which was riddled with Waffle Houses, Buc-ee's, and trucker stops along the way), we arrived at the Myrtles around 9:30pm. We were told to meet the overnight caretaker, Taylor, in the coffee shop on property to check in and get our key.

As we walked up the pathway to the coffee shop, we took in the aesthetic of the property, and could feel something was different at this location. It was a feeling of peace, with a little bit of mischief.

We entered the coffeeshop and were greeted by Taylor. She was a welcoming young woman with a slight Southern drawl, and she was eager to talk to us about the spirits she has encountered throughout her tenure at The Myrtles.

She told us our suite, the Bradford suite, was "definitely haunted" and felt would be having an eventful stay. She gave us a little bit of a warning: "don't be surprised if things get deleted off of your phone, or you lose evidence." What do you mean, I asked. "We have have many guests and employees take photos or videos of something they captured and when they've gone back to it, it's not on their phone anymore.

I'll admit - I was a bit skeptical. I thought, maybe there was a glitch on their phone, or maybe they were not as tech-savvy as they thought they were.

Nic and I checked into our room after wandering the property for about an hour, and we could have sworn we heard footsteps behind us as we walked on the driveway to head back into our room.

As we got ready to settle in for the night, I was excited to set up my pocket camera that I had just bought on Amazon, specifically to record everything and anything while we slept. The battery lasts for about 4-6 hours, according to the manual, and I installed a 32GB memory card that was fresh. I set it up on the desk across from the canopy bed. Nic was in the corner, in view of the camera, set up on a couch.

We were told about a little girl named Kate, who roams the property. She died at the age of 3 and according to Taylor, visited guests before by knocking on their door and asking them to be quiet. We truly wanted to contact her, and when we got back to our room, we called out to her. We told her we wanted to meet her, and that we wouldn't be scared. I told her about being a mom myself, and how old my kids were. I can't tell you how badly I wanted to encounter her! I never thought I'd have such an affinity for ghost children, but here we are.

Once we settled into bed, we left a night light on so the camera had some light as it did not have night vision. Nic and I were laying down for about 10-15 minutes, trying to fall asleep until....

We heard three distinct taps on the window closest to my bed. Then, a high pitched "hi!"

“NIC, did you hear that?!”

Uh-huh.

I jumped up and looked out the window to see if maybe it was one of the cats roaming the property. I saw nothing outside the window. If anything, the window was a bit too high for a cat to have gotten up there, let alone make three distinct little taps on a window.

I was so excited because my CAMERA was filming the whole thing!! I couldn't wait to check it the next morning.

Eventually, we woke up around 8:30am. We went to breakfast and then when we came back, I checked the camera.

No. Nooooo. NOOOO.

The clip ran for only 50 seconds!

The camera shows me climbing into bed, Nic in the corner putting his phone away, and then you hear a loud, strange banging sound before we lay down and the video cuts.

The camera was on the entire night. It never lost power. But somehow, it stopped recording after I got into my bed. It never picked up what we believe to be Kate, knocking on our window.

I say this all the time but sometimes, these paranormal experiences are for US, and us alone to experience. We aren't always meant to show non-believers because you wouldn't believe it anyway - unless you were there.

Maybe, just maybe, spirits know that there's nothing they can do to change your mind.

But, she sure as hell proved to me that sometimes, the spirits do come out when you call them.
